MALACCA: Police yesterday obtained a three-day extension of a remand order from the magistrate's court here to assist in investigations into self-proclaimed "Sultan Melaka" Noor Jan Tuah under the Sedition Act.
The order to detain the 56-year-old businessman till Jan 21 from today was issued by court assistant registrar V. Kanasan at the Ayer Keroh Court complex at 11.10am.
At 10am yesterday, the Noor Jan was escorted to the court complex in his police lock-up uniform by a team of plain-clothed policemen, headed by investigating officer Kumares Raja Ratnam.
He was arrested by police at the Anjung Batu jetty at 10.50am on Tuesday while waiting to board a boat to Pulau Besar to attend a thanksgiving feast on the alleged revival of the Malacca Sultanate.
On Jan 15, Kanasan had ordered a four-day remand for Noor Jan, which had expired yesterday.
The arrest was based on at least 10 reports made by several organisations, which had expressed concern after a so-called investiture plan and invitations to attend the event.
Noor Jan, who is from Kampung Teluk Perang in Parit, Perak, had last month claimed being the rightful "Sultan of Melaka" after he alleged that it was endorsed by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on Nov 25, though denied by the ICJ.
On Jan 8, Malacca Chief Minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron said the state government had dismissed the claim.
Noor Jan had written a letter to Idris to discuss the matter, claiming he had obtained the recognition from the ICJ.
In doing so, Noor Jan had tried to challenge the Federal Constitution, which mentions Malacca as a state administered by a federal representative as the head of state, who is appointed by the King.
